Sex Therapy
While we live in a sex-saturated culture, most of us are woefully unprepared to talk about sex in a healthy way. It’s common for sexual dissatisfaction to go hand in hand with unnecessary confusion, suffering, shame, and silence. Sex therapy helps.
Sex therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy focused on sexual functioning, intimacy, and the emotional, psychological, and behavioral issues related to sex.
Because sex therapy goals are typically more targeted than goals of general therapy, the duration of the therapeutic process is often shorter. However, each client and partnership are different, as is their course of treatment. Sex therapy typically includes the following components:
-
- Assessment of the presenting issues
- Sexuality education
- Therapeutic Interventions
Note: Sex therapy is not clinically indicated for all couples. During the assessment process, it is often determined that clients would benefit from Couples Counseling prior to engaging in sex therapy, particularly if they have perpetual problems with communication
Common Goals:
- To identify and address underlying causes of sexual issues and dysfunctions (including problems with desire, arousal, orgasm, erection, and pain)
- To rekindle sexual satisfaction within a long-term relationship
- To develop skills for communicating about sex
- To better understand sexual orientation or gender identity
- To heal sexual trauma
- To gain confidence as a sexual being
- To address sexual issues related to life changes (including infertility, parenting, illness, and aging)
- To explore healthy ways of fulfilling sexual needs and desires (including with those who identify as kink, non-monogamous, or polyamorous)
Sexual Health Consultations
In addition to sex therapy, I offer one-time 90-minute sexual health consultations for individuals and partners seeking short-term support and resources around a specific sexual issue. Two weeks prior to a consultation, I send clients a list of questions to answer and return. With that information, I tailor specific resources and recommendations, which we then discuss during the consultation (either in person or online). Clients leave with a document detailing recommendations, including appropriate referrals if needed.
